This course is divided into Biological topics each containing different key concepts of Biology. Once the key features of a Biological topic have been developed, applications are considered. In this course we encourage students to develop their interest and enthusiasm for Biology, including developing an interest in careers and further study in Biology and to develop and demonstrate a deeper appreciation of the skills, knowledge and understanding of how science works and develop essential knowledge and understanding of different areas of Biology and how they relate to each other.
How is the course organised and assessed?
Throughout the two year course, students will be taught through a combination of activities, class discussions, student lead presentations, private study, independent learning, use of IT and experimental and investigative work. At the end of this, students will sit three exam papers which will assess all they have learnt over the course.
Paper 1 - Examination paper; 76 marks: a mixture of short and long answer questions. 15 marks: extended response question.
Paper 2 - Examination paper; 76 marks: a mixture of short and long answer questions. 15 marks: comprehension question.
Paper 3 - Examination paper; 38 marks: structured questions, including practical techniques. 15 mark: critical analysis of given experimental data. 25 mark: essay from a choice of two titles.
