Year 8 Update - Spring 2

This term has been a busy but productive term, filled with exciting learning experiences both in and out of the classroom which have allow the opportunity for real personal growth within the year group.
Tutor Time Curriculum
This term, our tutor time curriculum has focused on important and thought-provoking topics, including crime in society, gang culture, how to help victims of county lines, knife crime, child sexual exploitation, online grooming and substance misuse. Students have also developed their digital literacy skills with our second Digital Literacy week of the year and engaged in self-reflection activities by looking at their performances in our second round of date reporting.
At the start the term we welcomed two representatives from Warwickshire Police, who delivered assemblies on community safety. This initiative forms part of our wider PSHE programme as we continue to hear about knife crime and community conflict. Some useful links were also shared during the assembly to support students and detailed in Mr Lowdell's Parent Letter 28 February which is also on our website.
We supported Neurodiversity week (March 17 - 23) which included an assembly and prompted discussions in Tutor Groups about the ways we can be inclusive in school.
World Book Day – 6 March
We had a fantastic time celebrating World Book Day on 6 March. It was wonderful to see so many students engaging in reading activities, sharing their favourite books, and embracing the joy of literature. Thank you to everyone who took part and helped make the day a success. In tutor time, College groups competed to guess the books based on some clues given to them. It was a tough competition, but I am delighted that the winners included:
- Croft - 8CT01
- Binswood - 8BW01
Loud Mouth – 10 March
During this term, the Loudmouth Theatre Company visited the school to work with Year 8 students around a program titled ‘Working for Marcus.’ Loudmouth Education & Training’s work aims to ensure a future where all children and young people are healthy, happy, safe and resilient. and support Relationships and Health Education in schools. The theme of the performance was around child exploitation, county lines and relationships. This involved a performance in the main theatre followed by small workshops with groups of students throughout the rest of the day.
World of Work Careers Event – 12 March
Year 8 participated in their second career event of the term. This session involved guest speakers from the Department of Work and Pensions, and the Army. Students looked at the sorts of roles that they could have in each sector, what it’s like to work there, how they can find out more information as well as how each guest speaker had progressed to their current role. These events are so important is allowing students to see the purpose of school, how they develop employability skills and how it can allow them to explore a range of possibilities they may be interested in.
Race for Life – 21 March
Our annual Race for Life took place on Friday, 21 March, with students challenging themselves to complete as many laps of our school playing field—approximately one mile—during the afternoon.
Thanks to the incredible efforts of our students and staff, and the generosity of our school community, we successfully raised £2,393 through donations and sponsorships in support of Cancer Research UK.
A huge thank you to everyone who took part and contributed to this important cause!

On Monday 7 April, the 30 students with the highest number of points were invited to the Spring Rewards event where they were treated to freshly baked cupcakes. We love to celebrate their achievements! There will be another Rewards Event in the Summer Term for all of the Year 8s to aim for.
Calendar
Looking ahead to the summer term is always a real highlight, not least with the Year 8 Paris Trip in June for those able to join us.
As next half term is only four weeks long, this gives us all a great opportunity to push for 100% attendance! On Friday 23 May we will be holding a Celebration Event for the Tutor Group with the highest attendance next half term. The highest attending Tutor Group from each year group will be invited down with their Form Tutor to celebrate with some pizza. We know how much attendance matters in school and we are looking forward to seeing which Tutor Groups will come out on top! Please do encourage your child to give their very best attendance next half term, it has a huge positive impact on their progress in school.
During the first week back beginning 28 April 2025, students will have the opportunity to swap their usual PE top for a sports top of their choice! Whether it’s a football, rugby, cricket, or basketball top, they can take part by donating £1, with all proceeds going to Prostate Cancer UK. Donations can also be made through ParentPay. Join us in supporting a great cause while showing off your favourite sports team!
We’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support, and we wish you all a restful and enjoyable break. We look forward to welcoming everyone back for a successful Summer Term!
Kind regards
