Year 7 Update - Summer 1
This term has been a short but an incredibly busy one for Year 7. We started the half term with an incredible weekend away to Whitemoor Lakes Activity Centre. This was a fantastic experience for all involved. If you haven’t had an opportunity to read the article about the trip on the website you can read it in the News Section in this Parent Bulletin
Year 7 are already proving to be a really talented year group on the sports field and I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate again the boys and girls football squads for winning the District Cup.
Tutor Curriculum
In the tutor curriculum this half term students have been focusing on the following topic areas.
- Introduction to Puberty
- Personal Hygiene
- King’s Coronation
- Assertiveness and Consent
- Self Esteem and Empowerment
The King’s Coronation event included a bake sale and I have to say the contributions from Year 7 were fantastic (and also very tasty). Well done to all involved. Next half term's tutor curriculum will focus around managing change and aligns with students’ transition into Year 8.
Our Coronation Bake Off took place on Friday 5th May. We were so pleased to have received a large number of entries from students in all year groups and staff. All students who entered, and showed real commitment to our school community, have received R4s. There was a real buzz in the courtyard at break time when the cakes were sold to raise money for The Prince’s Trust. We are so proud that our students raised over £200 for this fantastic charity! Thank you to all of our parents/carers who supported their child in engaging with this.
It was really hard for the judges to choose the winning entries and were genuinely so impressed with the baking skills of our NLS students.
Oliver B in Year 7 was crowned the winner based on this creativity and originality! A massive well done to all of the entries.
Transition Leaders
The transition programme, led by Mrs McBride, is now well underway and it was brilliant to see over 100 students apply to be a Transition Leader and support current Year 6 students with their move to NLS. Over coming weeks some of these students will be returning to their old Primary School to meet with Year 6 students alongside supporting specific in-school activities in the lead up to September. I am sure they will continue to represent NLS in an exemplary manner and pass on some pertinent advice to the younger students given their experiences across this year.
Reward Points
Celebrating successes and gaining reward points continue to be at the heart of all activities within school and it gives me great pleasure to highlight the top 10 students in Year 7. A big well done also to Miss Thornton, Mr Biddle and 7BD02 who have the highest overall tutor group score for this half term.
I would like to highlight two successes linked to Numeracy and Mathematics. We had a number of students selected to participate in the nationwide Maths Challenge recently and a number of students were presented with the following certificates in a recent assembly. A special well done to Wilbur and Ellie as very few Gold certificates are awarded and this is an outstanding achievement.
In addition to this Mr Rae has been running a weekly numeracy competition where students have the opportunity to answer a Maths problem to be in with a chance of winning a £10 Amazon Voucher.
